Cel animation

An animation technique in which each frame is made by hand. Moving elements are painted on a series of clear celluloid sheets (‘cels’) that are laid on top of painted backgrounds and photographed. When the images are shown in a sequence, the images on the cels create the illusion of fluid movement.
