E. H. Shepard: An Illustrator's War

Main Gallery, House of Illustration
9 October 2015 – 24 January 2016

Huis Doorn, The Netherlands

E. H. Shepard's illustrations from the trenches of WWI.

Content warning: This page contains discussions and depictions of war and weaponry.

This exhibition was the first to explore E. H. Shepard’s drawings from the Western Front and wartime Italy – a very different side to the illustrator best known for Winnie the Pooh and The Wind in the Willows.

It included over 100 original artworks from Shepard’s time as a Royal Artillery officer, many never publicly exhibited before.

The exhibition presented the breadth and variety of Shepard's wartime illustration, from cartoons for Punch and technical drawings to personal sketches and illustrated correspondence. It also featured personal items including his family paint box, uniform, family photos and his maps of the trenches.

This was placed within the context of Shepard’s career as an illustrator, from his early work to the first rough sketches for Winnie the Pooh.
