Janina Ede

British illustrator Janina Ede (1937-2018) created cover designs and illustrations for more than 100 books. In the 1970s, she worked on the BBC’s storytelling series Jackanory, creating bold illustrations that took full advantage of a new technology: colour television.

Working across print and screen, Ede used a range of materials and techniques. This exhibition explores her process.

“I feel had I not chosen to be an illustrator, I would have wished to become either a vet or shepherdess.”

Janina Ede (1937-2018) worked as a freelance illustrator for over 20 years. Many of her illustrations featured animals, which she drew from life.

Ede said that she would have tended sheep if she hadn’t become an illustrator. When she retired from illustration in the 1980s, that’s what she did: Ede looked after a local flock that she observed and sketched.
