Paula Rego/Honoré Daumier:
Scandal, Gossip and Other Stories
Main Gallery, House of Illustration
14 Nov 2014 – 22 March 2015
Two of illustration's greatest storytellers in dialogue.
Although more than a century separates Paula Rego and Honoré Daumier, the two artists share a wide range of common concerns and approaches which were explored in this unique exhibition.
Both are consummate storytellers who use printmaking (in the form of lithographs and etchings) to bring their visions, stories and politics to a wider audience.
Rego’s psychologically charged and satirical presentations of human drama have won her great acclaim; while caricaturist Daumier was a wry observer of human comedy who exaggerated the aspirations, affectations and failings of society.
Works by Daumier have been selected from the more than 4,000 lithographs made during his lifetime, principally for the publications Le Charivari and La Caricature.
