David Lemm: Mapping King's Cross

Quentin Blake Gallery, House of Illustration
28 January – 6 March 2016

A multi-disciplinary exploration of the changing King's Cross landscape

Illustrator in Residence David Lemm spent six months mapping King’s Cross as it changed over time. He noted forms in the landscape, considering how we perceive, navigate and quantify in order to make sense of the world.

This research culminated in an exhibition of thoughtful collage works, which utilise the tactile quality of paper. They playfully reflect Lemm’s experiments with handmade processes during his residency.

The gallery became the centre point of his personal “map” of the area, with each wall depicting observations and experiences encountered during the residency, categorised into a library of shapes, symbols, times and spaces from which narratives can be read or created.
